Frenchies & Festivities: Your Memorial Day Weekend Safety Guide

Memorial Day weekend is finally here! It’s the unofficial kickoff to summer, full of backyard barbecues, family pool parties, and a chance to honor the brave heroes who served our country.

If you are a French Bulldog parent, you already know that your bat-eared shadow will want to be right in the middle of all the action. However, Frenchies are a unique breed with very specific needs—especially when the summer weather rolls around. Because they are brachycephalic (short-muzzled), they handle heat, humidity, and excitement a lot differently than other dogs.

To help you enjoy a fun, relaxing, and incident-free three-day weekend, we’ve put together the ultimate Frenchie Memorial Day survival guide!

1. Beat the Heat (The #1 Frenchie Rule)

While your neighbors' labs might be able to chase a frisbee in the afternoon sun, your Frenchie cannot. Because of their shortened airways, they cannot cool themselves down efficiently through panting. Late May temperatures can quickly cross into the danger zone.

• Mid-Day Lockdowns: Keep outdoor time strictly limited to quick bathroom breaks during the hottest parts of the day (typically 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM).

• The 7-Second Test: Frenchie paws are sensitive. Touch the back of your hand to the pavement or patio stone. If you can't comfortably hold it there for 7 seconds, it's too hot for your dog to walk on.

• Invest in Cool Tech: Cooling vests, damp towels, and elevated mesh beds are excellent for backyard hangouts.

2. Water Safety: Sink, Don't Swim

It's a common misconception that all dogs are natural-born swimmers. Frenchies, as a rule, sink like rocks. Thanks to their dense bone structure, heavy chests, and short legs, they cannot keep their snout above water without serious struggle.

• Life Jackets are Mandatory: If your holiday plans involve a backyard pool, a lake, or a boat, your Frenchie mustwear a properly fitted life jacket with a rescue handle on the back.

• Secure the Pool Area: Ensure your pool has a fence or a safety cover. A Frenchie can easily slip poolside and fall in unnoticed during a busy family gathering.

• Stick to Splash Pads: Instead of deep water, opt for a shallow plastic kiddie pool or a doggy splash pad filled with just a couple of inches of cool water.

3. The BBQ Guard Detail

The smell of grilling burgers is pure heaven to a Frenchie, and they will use every ounce of their cartoonish charm to beg for a bite. But holiday foods can quickly trigger a trip to the emergency vet.

4. Skip the Fireworks & Ditch the Human Spray

Many communities celebrate Memorial Day with evening fireworks or loud music. Because Frenchies are highly intuitive and closely bonded to their humans, loud, unexpected blasts can trigger massive anxiety, which leads to panicked panting—and panicked panting leads to overheating. Keep your pup securely indoors in an air-conditioned room with white noise or a fan running when the sun goes down.

Also, if the bugs are biting, keep your human bug sprays and sunscreens away from your pup. Ingredients like DEET and zinc oxide are highly toxic if licked off their fur. Stick to shade and dog-safe bug repellents.
