Beat the August Heat: Essential Late-Summer Care Tips for Your Frenchie
Welcome back to the Ward’s Frenchies 2 Yours family blog!
As August arrives, summer reaches its peak with soaring temperatures and humid afternoons. While we love enjoying outdoors with our dogs, the August heat requires extra vigilance when it comes to French Bulldogs. Because of their adorable flat faces (brachycephalic structure), Frenchies struggle to cool themselves down as efficiently as other breeds.
Whether you welcomed a puppy from one of our litters or you're a long-time Frenchie parent, here are our top tips for keeping your compact companion cool, healthy, and happy all through August!
1. Beat Heatstroke Before It Starts
Heatstroke can develop rapidly in French Bulldogs. Their shorter airways mean heavy panting isn't always enough to regulate body temperature in high heat.
Shift Walking Times: Keep walks restricted to early mornings before 9:00 AM or late evenings after the sun goes down and pavement cools down.
The 5-Second Asphalt Rule: Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for Frenchie paws!
Know the Signs: Excessive panting, bright red or purple gums, drooling, lethargy, or weakness are signs of heat distress. If you see these, move your dog into air conditioning immediately, place wet towels on their chest/paws, and contact your vet.
2. Keep Wrinkles & Paws Dry and Clean
August humidity can trap moisture in all those adorable folds and paw pads, creating a breeding ground for yeast and irritation.
Daily Fold Wipes: Clean facial wrinkles daily with a gentle, dog-safe wipe or a damp cloth, followed by drying with a clean towel.
Tail Pocket Check: Don't forget to check under their tail! Humidity makes tail-pocket irritation flare up quickly in late summer.
Paw Maintenance: After outdoor trips, wipe paws to remove allergens, hot grass clippings, or heated dust.
3. Hydration with a Fun Twist
Staying hydrated doesn't have to be boring! Boost your Frenchie's fluid intake with engaging treats:
Pupsicles: Freeze dog-safe bone broth, sliced apples (seeds removed), or blueberries into ice cube trays for a refreshing, hydrating snack.
Lick Mats: Spread dog-safe peanut butter or plain Greek yogurt onto a textured lick mat and freeze it. Licking calms anxiety and lowers core body temperature!
4. Late-Summer Flea, Tick & Mosquito Defense
August is peak season for pests, including mosquitoes (which transmit heartworm).
Keep up to date with your vet-prescribed monthly flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives.
Check coat folds, behind ears, and under arms after brief outdoor excursions.
5. Indoor Enrichment for Hot Days
When it's simply too hot outside, bring the fun indoors so your Frenchie still burns mental energy without over-exerting in the heat:
Scent Work: Hide low-calorie treats around the living room or in a snuffle mat.
Basic Manners Refresh: Spend 10 minutes practicing basic obedience like sit, stay, or gentle touch commands.
